Famous Wild Horses
Perhaps the most famous of all the wild horses is the American Mustang. These majestic, powerful horses have been roaming the West for hundreds of years.
With their wild spirits and stunning beauty, Mustangs have become an American icon. Here are some famous Mustangs that have made a lasting impact in the equine world.
Spirit
Just about everyone is familiar with the 2002 hit film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. However, many people don’t realize that a real Kiger Mustang named Spirit served as inspiration for the film’s artists and animators.
The animators spent countless hours watching every detail of Spirit to create a realistic representation of the Mustang on-screen. After the completion of the film, Spirit moved to the Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary in California where he serves as a representative of the magnificent Kiger Mustang breed.
Cloud
The pale palomino Mustang stallion Cloud lived in the picturesque Pryor Mountains. His alluring beauty and strength drew the attention of Emmy-winning filmmaker Ginger Kathrens.
Kathrens made multiple documentaries following the life of Cloud, bringing his story to the public eye and gaining him a large fan following. Congress went on to declare Cloud an ambassador for all wild horses living in the American West.
Picasso
Picasso the Mustang developed a large fanbase for his perseverance, strength, and beautiful appearance. His striking brown and white pinto coat and two-toned mane made him stand out.
Picasso has become America’s most famous Mustang, with many traveling to the Sand Wash Basin in Colorado in hopes of catching a glimpse of the exquisite stallion. While it is believed he has now passed away in the wild, the stunning Mustang has left quite a legacy.
Cobra
Born in the beautiful mountains of Nevada, Cobra was rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management when he was six years old. After originally being deemed unadoptable, Cobra got his lucky break when he became eligible for the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge.
Seeing potential in the dashing bay, Marsha Hartford-Sapp went on to adopt Cobra. While Cobra didn’t make the top 10 of the challenge, he went on to become a phenomenal dressage horse. Competing in both classical and western dressage, Cobra has won eight national titles as well as the 2018 USEF National Horse of the Year.
Hwin
On a whim, eventing trainer Elisa Wallace entered the 2015 Magic Makeover where she was paired with a lovely gray Mustang mare named Hwin. After a respectable fourth-place finish, Wallace decided to purchase Hwin and train her for eventing.
Despite the odds, Hwin has become a superstar in eventing. The unlikely duo took the eventing world by storm, moving up through the ranks and gaining many admirers along the way.
