Famous Ponies
While there are plenty of famous horses throughout history, it is not as often that we hear about famous ponies. However, there have been many small yet mighty ponies that have left their mark on the equine world.
Misty of Chincoteague
Misty was a Chincoteague pony who served as the inspiration for the best-selling children’s book Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. Misty was a palomino pinto mare owned by Henry. The darling pony quickly became a celebrity after the success of Henry’s book.
Misty of Chincoteague went on to have three foals: Phantom Wings, Wisp O’ Mist, and Misty. Upon becoming a best-selling book, Misty even got her own movie Misty (1961).
Stroller
Stroller is the only pony ever to compete at the Olympics in show jumping. Standing at 14.1 hands tall, Stroller was a Thoroughbred and Connemara cross.
Marion Coakes’ father brought Stroller for her when she was 13 and together they saw much success in the juniors division.
At age 16, Marion’s father wanted to get her a bigger horse but Marion insisted on continuing to compete with her beloved Stroller. The pair won an incredible 61 international competitions including a silver Olympic medal and gold and silver medals at the Women’s World Championships.
Carltonlima Emma
Carltonlima Emma was one of Queen Elizabeth’s most beloved Fell ponies. Emma was the trusted mount of Her Majesty, as she was often seen riding her striking black pony in Windsor Great Park.
After the death of the Queen, Emma attended her funeral, wearing one of the Queen’s headscarves. Emma went on to win the Agria Horse of a Lifetime Award at the 2022 Horse & Hound Awards.
