1923 picks up 40 years after 1883. At this point, James and Margaret are now dead and Jacob, James’s brother, and his wife Cara run the ranch. They face a whole new set of struggles as they try to keep up with the ever-changing times of the early 20th century.

Yellowstone takes place in the present day. At this point, John Dutton III is the patriarch of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Along with his children, he must protect his land from real estate agents, land developers, and the Broken Rock Reservation.

Each series follows a different generation of the Dutton family. The only character to appear in two of the series is John Dutton Sr. John Sr. was a young child in 1883 and he appeared in 1923 as an adult.
