The wonderful world of Disney is full of many well-loved horses. They often are full of character and trusty partners to their companions. These cherished Disney horse characters have been some of the best characters from Disney movies.

Abu (Aladdin)

Though Abu is known for being Aladdin’s loyal monkey, he is temporarily transformed into a horse by the Genie. The Lipizzaner Stallion Abu was turned into is commonly used as a horse for royals. However, Genie opted for a grander statement to impress Jasmine’s father.

The brief appearance of Aladdin’s horse was gone with the magical snap of Genie’s fingers.

Achilles (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Phoebus rides Achilles, a crafty Thoroughbred, in the Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and its sequel. Phoebus is a loyal and brave horse that helps Achilles in many troublesome situations.

Angus (Brave)

Angus, a striking Shire horse, is Merida’s faithful companion in the horse movie Brave. He shares a strong bond with Merida and is considered her most trusted friend.

Freewheeling rides across the countryside with Angus lead Merida to the circle of stones that set her upon her adventure.

Brave, like his courageous princess, Angus carries Merida along the path of the magical and mysterious wisps of the woods.

Buck (Home on the Range)

Sheriff Sam Brown’s Quarter Horse Buck is an adventure-seeking, action-hungry horse that is one of the main characters from Home on the Range.

With dreams of fighting bandits with his bare hooves, Buck is a karate-chopping stallion of the range. After some sweet daydreams mid-tic tac toe, Buck tries to show off his moves to his canine friend with questionable skills.

Determined to capture local riff-raff, Buck’s adventures with the sheriff, a local bounty hunter, and other characters lead him to strike out on his own to get the job done.

Bullseye (Toy Story 2 & 3)

A stuffed caricature of a loyal Stock horse, Bullseye embodies the heart and power of these wonderful horses throughout the entire Toy Story series. When Woody needs his number one steed, Bullseye can be counted on through thick and thin.

Buttercup (Toy Story 3)

Though not strictly a horse, Buttercup is a white plush unicorn from Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4. With his pink heart nostrils and golden horn, mane, and tail, Buttercup is a boy unicorn with a sarcastic and witty manner. Jeff Garlin plays Buttercup in Toy Story and does a marvelous job bringing this Disney horse to life.

Captain (101 Dalmatians)

Captain is the name of the grey horse in 101 Dalmations. Proving himself well, this Captain plays a vital role in rescuing the stolen puppies. 

His name, and a British military horse blanket lead viewers to the understanding that he has experience in service. 

Along with his fellow companions, Colonel the dog, and Sergeant Tibbs the cat, Captain is a valued ally in the fight against 101 Dalmatians movie villain, Cruella DeVille.

Cyril Proudbottom (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr.Toad)

Cyril Proudbottom is Mr. Toad’s trusty horse and companion in the Disney movie The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949). Voiced by Pat O’Malley, Cyril is the horse in the Wind in the Willows segment of the movie. 

The cart-horse crooner sings “We’re Merrily On Our Way” with Mr. Toad in his original movie debut. Cyril also has cameo roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, and an episode of Mickey Mouse. 

A popular classic Disney horse, Cyril Proudbottom is also a Disney World horse featured in Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

Destiny (Enchanted)

Destiny is Prince Edward’s noble white horse who he rides when he charms Giselle in the movie Enchanted. In the animated and live-action movie, Destiny is a gorgeous animated character. 

Frou-Frou (The Aristocats)

Frou-Frou is Madame Bonfamille’s horse in Disney’s The Aristocats. Long in the tooth, Frou-Froe has a kind demeanour and a clear love for her patron and other animals around her. 

She is a noble friend to Duchess the cat and her kittens. Frou-Frou helps save the fair mother and her wee kitties from cat burglar Edgar.

The splendid matched pair is Cinderella’s mice friends, including Jaq and Gus. Transformed into beautiful white horses by her fairy godmother to pull Cinderella’s carriage to the ball, the mice are the best horses for the job.

Khan (Mulan)

Khan is the Mulan’s trusty horse in the Disney movie Mulan. The courageous stallion is a Ferghana horse breed, which is now extinct. Khan is brave and always there for Mulan when she needs him, carrying her into battle against the Huns.

Wild rides into several precarious situations, including an avalanche, are no problem for Khan. This horse has the heart of a warrior and is the perfect horse for Mulan.

Kjekk (Frozen)

Kjekk is Anna’s horse in the Disney movie Frozen. He is a Norwegian Fjord horse breed and grew up with Anna. Kjekk and Anna ride together in a quest to find Elsa after she flees Arendelle. 

Separated after a fall, Kjekk rushes back to Arendelle and leaves Anna alone in the snow. Perhaps not the best horse for Anna to have when riding alone in the woods.

Major (Cinderella)

Major, the trusty horse of Cinderella’s farm is a jovial companion and admirer of Cinderella. When it came time for the Fairy Godmother to choose the best horse to pull her coach to the ball, Major was turned into the coachman. 

Maximus (Tangled)

Maximus is Rapunzel’s horse in the Disney movie Tangled. His debut on screen as a palace horse for the Royal Guard, Maximus is unwavering in his hot pursuit of Flynn Rider.

Wooed by Rapunzel in helping her on a quest, Maximus ultimately joins Flynn to keep her safe on her journey.  Maximus is full of personality and is very dedicated to his job. 

Maximus is considered by many to be the best Disney horse. Earning top billing with his performance, he shares the cover on Tangled with Rapunzel and Flynn.

Patrick (Home on the Range)

Unlike Buck, Patrick is reserved, serious and is quite a gullible horse from Home on the Range.

Pegasus (Hercules)

The legendary creature of the Disney Pegasus is a free-wheeling winged white horse. Raised from a foal by Hercules when he was a young boy, the relationship between demigod and mythical equine was one of brotherly love.

Phillipe (Beauty and the Beast)

Phillipe is a Belgian Draft horse that belongs to Belle in Beauty and the Beast. During a frightful trip with Belle’s father into the woods, Phillipe is led down the path to the Beast’s castle.

Samson (Sleeping Beauty)

It’s not every day a horse has to face the wrath of a fire-breathing lizard. Samson’s incredible strength is proven in the battle.

Sitron (Frozen)

Sitron is Hans’s horse in Disney’s Frozen. He appears with Hans is in Arendelle. Strong and handsome, Sitron is a Norwegian Fjord with a goofy personality.

He attempts to help his master from falling into cold seawater but fails to follow through thanks to some distraction by the lovely Anna.

Snowball (Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Snowball is the fierce steed of the Hunchback of Notre Dame villain, Claude Frollo. Despite being named Snowball, he is a striking black Friesan.

Snowball’s unfortunate name is a bit of a lame joke. Seriously, this strong horse is a character who deserved a bit more than the writers gave him. 

The Nokk (Frozen 2)

The Nokk is a majestic water horse with magical powers from Frozen 2. A wild element, there is a fantastic tussle between Elsa and the Nokk as she tames him. 

Elsa rides the Nokk throughout her adventures in Frozen 2 and his cooperation is integral in her effort to save Arandelle. A beautiful and unique Disney horse, the Nokk is a wonderful new addition to the Disney Horse list.

Carousel Horses (Mary Poppins)

The original carousel horses in Mary Poppins do not have names. However, the carousel at Disneyland has a horse dedicated to Mary Poppins named Jingles. 

Imagination and Poppins-magic in the movie lead to the horses jumping off of their carousel, enjoying a country ride, and finding themselves at the racetrack. 

Mary’s purple carousel horse, with her prim nose in the air, flies by the pack to the astonishment of the jockeys and other racehorses.

Donkey is Shrek’s goofy best friend throughout the Shrek movies. In Shrek 2, Donkey is temporarily transformed into a horse.

As happy as he was to be a traditional “noble steed” the transformation was quite brief, and Donkey was back to his normal self in a blink. Regardless of which form he took, Donkey is an endearing and loyal hooved companion to Shrek.
